The 2018 School Competition Winners

Following the 2018 Martin-Lysicrates Prize event, teachers and their students were given the opportunity to win some amazing prizes for their school through a photo and a short essay submission.
The Brief:
Send a photo of students doing something relating to the Martin-Lysicrates competition such as voting, discussing, or acting a scene – in their natural environment, whether bush, desert, mountain or otherwise. Put a six-word caption to the photo and tell us something interesting about your school.
The Prize:
$1000 for books for the winning school’s library.
The Winner:
Teacher Nicola Hoffman, Literacy Coordinator, Chatswood High School
Teacher Hoffman’s Year 8 students acted out the Shifting Heart by Richard Beynon. As Chatswood is a 70% EAL/D school Nicola wanted to take a cross curricular approach to the English classroom and study Italian immigration in the 1960’s. The students loved the topic and engaged with the characters. On the last day of term they had an “Italian” party in their open air theatre while students performed their chosen scenes.
The class came up with the caption:
“Drama doesn’t care who you are”
The Brief:
Students were asked to write a 250 – 300 word essay that conveyed their opinion of the plays from the 2018 Martin-Lysicrates Prize. They named their favourite play and stated the reasoning behind this.
The Prize:
$50 book vouchers for the best entries.
The Winner:
Tamara Sweetman, Drama Coordinator, Pymble Ladies’ College with 6 students writing winning essays.
